Just popping in to say hi and for a quick post! Things are super busy around Ribbon Box. Fall is full of fun- weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, you name it! Sadly, it’s not full of extra time to blog, but we’ll be popping in here and there with a few snippets of inspiration, and a peek at a few of our events!

I was at the post office today saw these great stamps- would be perfect for mailing a save the date or reply card!

Word of the Week: Canape

1.a thin piece of bread or toast or a cracker spread or toppedwith cheese, caviar, anchovies, or other savory food.

 Wedding Wise:
Canapes are a type of hors d’oeuvres, made with a base of bread or crackers, and topped with an assortment of small, usually savory toppings. They are typically found at the cocktail hour of many wedding receptions before dinner is served.
 The word itself is French, and literally means couches, curtains or drapes (this literally means food drapes or covers the bread/cracker base).

A canape can consist of just about anything, though there are four basic parts:
1. the base (bread, cracker, cucumber)
2. a spread (tapenade, mousse)
3. a main item (smoked salmon, prosciutto)
4. garnish (capers,chopped veggies, truffle oil, herbs, scallions  etc.)

Locals in the DMV- Canapes has another meaning as well- a fabulous catering company and exclusive caterer for Thorpewood. We’re looking forward to working with them in October- but more on that later!

Travel Themed Bachelorette

Recently I had the pleasure of designing a travel themed-bachelorette weekend alongside an out-of-town Maid of Honor. She brought the idea and some inspiration, and we were off and running! Here’s a peek at the fun details!

 

The ladies day began the day with manis and pedis at a nearby nail salon. Then, it was back to the bride to be’s place for lunch, wine tasting, and merriment. Later that evening, was a culinary tour of DC- perfect foor the food and wine enthusiast bride to be!

Upon arrival, each guest received a passport filled with itinerary and wine tasting notes for the pairings later.

Lunch consisted of a worldwide array of goodies..

The tablescape consisted of an array of lunchtime goodies, and cheeses paired with our featured wines. Map-wrapped vases held simple floral centerpieces (get the how-to here!), a pint size suitcase from Paper-Source was the perfect platform for giving a bit of height. The backdrop was not only fitting, but functional. A beautiful map (laminated and mounted on foam board) was a beautiful backdrop, and also doubled as a present to the bride to be and her groom. In the spirit of the travel-theme, the map came with pins for the soon to be Mr. & Mrs. to log their travels together!

How cute is this suitcase from Paper-Source? It was the perfect punch of color, and gave a bit of depth and heighth to the table.

“Ocean” blue wine glasses were the perfect pop of color, and these airplane sat atop them with each guest’s name written in calligraphy (think wine charm, gone travel-themed!)

We used wine corks as menu holders and wrapped silverware for easy pickup in “ocean blue” polka dot napkins. The map  of country of origin of each food and wine gave some visual interest to the meal identifiers!

We asked each guest in attendance to wish the bride to be well and give her their best travel tip. Each guest wrote on a postcard from the city/state they know the Bride from (took a little bit of research,but well worth it!) We then assembled them all into a blue photo scrapbook, and post event, added photos from all the festivities  (the logo on the outside matches their t-shirts for the evening out!) . It served as a fabulous memento and reminder of her day and how much her friends love her!

For a bit of fun, we played two games: one was a “How Well do you Know the Bride? The other echoed the travel theme, “I Love You” Around the World, where guests tried to pair translations of “I Love You” with the country of origin. The person with the most correct matches earned a Starbucks gift card!

On their way out, each lovely lady in attendance left with a personalized luggage tag to commemorate the day!

Then it was off to a few area restaurants to go tapa hopping and have some fun! Cheers ladies!

Word of the Week: Pintuck

Pintuck

noun

Officially:
1. In sewing, a tuck is a fold or pleat in fabric, sewn into place. When the tucks are very narrow, they are called pintucks (similar to a pleat).
2. Tucks are commonly used in children’s clothing because they shorten a garment. As the child grows, the garment can be lengthened (commonly referred to as “let down”) by removing the stitching that held the tuck in place.

Wedding Wise:
Most pintuck linens are a taffeta fabric with narrow sewn rows of fabric that give a decorative raised look to the linens. Pintucks give a decorative effect to the fabric, creating a visual line at a chosen point. The raised crisscross look flawlessly adds subtle depth and texture to guest tables. Whether used as a runner in conjunction with a polyester, bengaline, or satin base, pintuck linens are a great choice!

Wheels up DC, Ribbon Box… Out!

Just a quick note to share that we’re headed on vacation.. starting NOW until next week to celebrate a dear friend’s wedding in San Gregorio, and then vacation and play tourists in San Francisco! The blog will be loaded up with fun posts while we’re away, and we’ll be sure to recap our trip upon return! Otherwise, the office will be closed until August 29th, when we will respond to new client inquiries!

Word of the Week: Chiavari

1. A town on the Italian riviera, in the province of Genoa.

Wedding Wise:

Those versatile, elegant chairs that you never knew you wanted, until you see them and compare them to most venue’s chairs! Seriously though, I thought it’d be great to shed a little light on these well known, sought after seating options!

Chiavari chairs are named after the town in Italy where the chair was first designed and built by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi. It is said that Descalzi designed his chair based on several Parisian chairs. He sought out to make a lightweight, utilitarian (yet elegant) chair. Mission accomplished!

On their own, Chiavari chairs are elegant and beautiful. They come in a variety finished materials and colors (bamboo, beechwood, bronze, steel, oh my!).

While they are perfectly lovely on their own, they also provide a beautiful base for additional styling, be it floral, sash, or other!

DIY: Paper Wrapped Vases

I love how simple this project is- but the result is big and eye catching!

To add to little interest to any centerpiece, try swapping out those glass vases for something with a little more POP. Use simple, inexpensive flowers in single shades to soften the look, and let the vases take the attention. Recently, I designed a bachelorette weekend with a travel theme, I used maps to wrap cylinder vases.  Depending on your theme or color scheme, you can use just about any type of durable wrapping paper or scrapbook paper- though I would caution you to be careful with newspaper as the ink tends to bleed when in contact with water.  I chose the map wrapping paper from Paper-Source ($3.95 per sheet, which includes one map of the world) because I loved the old world look, and the size was perfect, I could use it to wrap more than one vase.

Materials:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Spray adhesive
  • Glass cylinder vases (you can use any shape- but be careful with curvy containers, paper will not lay smooth. Square and rectangle vases may require a little extra cutting and adhering).
  • Paper cutter (or scissors)

Getting Started

1.  Begin with a clean, dry, and flat surface. Lay out the vase on the paper and measure how much you’ll need to cover the vase. I like to leave a little room at the top to prevent frayed eges- and I know that the flowers I pop in will hang over a bit and cover any exposed glass. Leave some overlap to ensure you completely cover the vase

2.  Using a pencil, mark your cuts. Using a paper cutter, cut your paper to size.

3.  Apply spray adhesive on the wrapping paper.

4. Carefully place your cylinder on the paper, and slowly roll it up.

5. Press the paper edges firmly to ensure a secure closure.

Let stand for 1 hour before moving or assembling florals. Add to table display, and enjoy!

Vendor Spotlight: Atlantic Caterers

In a sea of caterers, it can be difficult to distinguish and choose just one- In this week’s Vendor Spotlight, meet Kristin of Atlantic Caterers! This friendly face is a true professional and I’ve enjoyed working with her and the entire staff- read on and enjoy!

Describe yourself in three words:  

Organized, Motivated, Tenacious

Why did you choose to work in weddings/special events?  

I worked for a local Baltimore restaurant for many years as their dining room/banquet manager.  When I booked their first wedding, I knew that was what I wanted to do as a career.

What do you love most about your job?  

Helping to make a bride & groom plan the most important day of their lives.

What inspires you?  

I try to pull my inspiration for an event from the couple.  It’s important, I believe, that a wedding reception help the guests get a glimpse into the likes and dislikes of the bride & groom.

Complete this sentence, “If I did not work in the wedding industry, I would…” 

…probably be miserable, then go back to my original profession, paralegal.

 How would you describe your style?  

I love couples who go with a “rustic” or “shabby chic” style wedding.  It most closely represents my own personal style.

What advice would you give to brides and grooms on choosing a caterer?  

Make sure you’re not only happy with the food, but also with the person within the catering company who will be handling your wedding.  There are amazing caterers in the Baltimore Metro area, but the bride & groom should feel a connection with the person who will be handling their wedding day.

What advice would you give to brides and grooms on the wedding planning process in general? 

Stay calm.  Things will happen, they always do.  Just trust that the people you’ve hired to execute your wedding will be there to handle any problems in a professional manner.

Lastly for fun, if they made a movie of your life,which actor would you want to play you?  

Probably Sandra Bullock!
