Wedding Research: For the Moms

Dear Digital Crinoline,
I am wondering if you can help me out. A family friend’s son is getting married in the coming year and his mother is looking for a dress. She is a large woman (Women’s 22) and has been having some problems finding a place that can help her. Do you know of any stores in the NYC, Long Island area (even Northern NJ) that carry a nice selection of plus-sized ‘Mother of…” dresses? Online options are also helpful, but it’d be great if there were some actual storefronts to visit too. I figured that you may have some experience with this. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
-Helping a Mother Out

It is really unfortunate that mother of the bride (or groom) gowns are not always available in a full range of sizes. Moms come in all shapes and sizes, just like brides- and everyone else! Before your friend despairs, remember that first, you don’t have to buy a traditional mother-of-the-bride (MOB) type dress unless you want to. Some moms look best in what would normally be termed a bridesmaid gown. Sometimes the best option of all is the dress you find by mistake, on clearance at the department store! Nordstrom has an excellent collection of “dressy dresses” that come in a range of sizes, certainly including women’s. These are available online and to a certain extent in stores, but it can be wise to call ahead to your local Nordstrom’s to get an idea of what they have in stock in your size.

Another basic option is… David’s Bridal. They are everywhere, and they do stock women’s sized MOB gowns in stores. It’s at least a good place to get an idea of what style you’re looking for, and of course the prices are more reasonable than at many bridal salons!

Finally, there are indeed many bridal salons that carry plus-sized bridal gowns, MOB gowns, and bridesmaid dresses in the New York area. These three have received good reviews, but as always I would encourage anyone shopping at a bridal salon to first call and determine what they have in stock- after all, if the whole idea is to try something on in person, you don’t want to get there and find out that they only have one gown in your size in stock.

  1. This post is great! It’s so important for the mothers to feel pretty as well. I was in a wedding recently and witnessed the MOB find the perfect dress. The look of happiness on her face was almost as enchanting as the bride’s when she found her dress. Thanks for the info.
