Vendor Spotlight: C Designs & Illustrations

This week, meet Christa Penner of C Designs & Illustrations! She’s a fabulous graphic designer who has a broad portfolio of branding, illustration, postcards, website design and stationery. You’re going to love the snippets she’s sharing with us today!!

1. Describe yourself in three words:

Ambitious, detail-oriented, personable

2. Why did you choose to work in weddings/event stationery?

I have always loved stationery and illustration. Hand making detailed pieces was always my niche in school. I wanted a way to keep hand making items and to create illustrations, and the wedding industry seemed like the perfect place to explore both of those directions. I love to custom design something for a couple that suits their personalities and their event theme. Creating something that is unique and makes them excited is a great feeling!

3. What do you love most about your job?

I love, LOVE making brides happy and excited about their stationery. Getting that phone call or email after you send over a first proof that says I LOVE this!!!, that is the best feeling.

4. What inspires you?
So many things inspire me. I spend a lot of time online researching other stationers and looking at other designers blogs. There are just so many talented artists out there to gain inspiration from. I also spend time looking at wedding sites to keep up with current styles and trends. Besides that, I love to hunt thrift stores and estate sales. Vintage design and products frequently inspire me. I also find a lot of inspiration in nature, and food, it all presents beauty in it’s own unique way.

5. Share one of the most memorable projects you took part in and why it was so special.
I’ve worked on a lot of weddings but my own was probably the most memorable (as is anyone’s own wedding!). It was interesting to the turn the tables on myself and be both the client and the designer. It definitely gave me a unique experience that makes it easier for me to see my clients point of view. My own invitations were definitely the most complex and involved of any job I have ever done. I hand carved a linoleum block and hand stamped the outer wrap on each invitation – I loved them but wow were they a lot of work! Thankfully I have great friends and family who helped me make it happen.

6. Complete this sentence, “If I did not work in the wedding industry, I would…..”
I would want to work for an ad agency. I love love love branding and consistent well done ad campaigns. This is something I incorporate into all of my wedding stationery as well. The theme through out your stationery should be consistent and should set the tone for your day. After all it is the first peak at your big day that your guests will see! So for me these two career paths work hand in hand.

7. How would you describe your style/product?
Clean, custom designs! I work directly with each bride to determine the look and feel they want to convey for their wedding. Each invitation is unique to the couple so my style covers a wide array of types. I feel like I have a lot of brides we are interested in the combination of a modern and traditional invitation, so I think a lot of my current work reflects that combination.

8. What advice would you give to brides and grooms on choosing a stationer and designer?
Make sure to choose someone who you are comfortable communicating with. It’s important that your designer listens to you and uses your ideas to create the perfect design for you.

9. What advice would you give to brides and grooms on the wedding planning process in general?
HAVE FUN! This is your wedding day, and while you want everything to be just perfect, you should also have fun getting there. It makes the day that much more special. In addition to that I would say, stick with a theme throughout all elements. Right from your stationery, to the wedding hall décor down to the escort cards.

10. Lastly for fun, if they made a movie of your life, which actor would you want to play you?
I’ve had lots of people tell me that Leah Remini is my hollywood doppleganger – but I am not sure I would want her to play me in a movie! I think if I had to pick I would choose Marissa Tomei.
