Wedding Wise:

Fascinators are simply fabulous hair pieces that make a wonderful addition to your bridal look.

They are also a fabulous accessory for bridesmaids,

and even the littlest member of your bridal party!

The word fascinator originally referred to a lacy head covering (think shawl) made from wool or lace but mostly made of feathers. Fascinators were worn in place of hats at formal occasions. Nowadays it’s a much broader spectrum of shapes, sizes, and materials that can be part of your fascinator.

Many brides opt for lace or feathers, and wear it in lieu of a wedding veil, or combine it to accent a birdcage veil. Popular materials include feathers, flowers, and beads. Fascinators can be attached to your hair by a comb, headband, or clip.

Advice: Should I get my wedding dress altered to my ceremony heels or reception shoes?

Filed under: Advice — by Ribbon Box Events, LLC @ 8:22 am

This is a pretty popular question. Many brides opt to wear heels for most of the wedding ceremony, photos, and into the reception. However, they anticipate that later, they will need or want to change to  more comfortable flats. The big concern for many is-  sometimes that is a difference of several inches between two different pairs of shoes- so what to do about the dress length?

A popular choice is to plan your footwear based around time of bustle. You should plan on wearing the shoes you plan to wear to your ceremony at your fittings. Have the alterations done to echo that shoe. When you attend your fitting to create the bustle- bring the shoes you plan on wearing later on (if they are of a different height)- and alert your seamstress so she can help pull the dress up a bit to accommodate for a smaller heel.

Another choice is to go mid-range in your footwear selections and select a medium heel for both  pairs to wear at ceremony and reception!

Of course, another option is to find a pair of shoes that are a comfortable height to last you the entire day and night!

Word of the Week: Topper

1.a person or thing that tops.
2.a woman’s loose, usually lightweight topcoat, especially one that is knee-length or shorter.

Wedding Wise:

A topper is something that goes on top of your cake (it is not necessary, but many choose to decorate the top tier of their cake. We’ve come a long way from the traditional bride and groom:

In this day and age there are a myriad of ways to customize your wedding, and this includes how you top your cake!
Florals that compliment the cake and the flowers in your bouquet are always a beautiful and classic choice:

Etsy has revolutionized the world of custom arts- making it accessible to all- and these caket toppers are an updated take on the classic bride and groom topper. Etsy seller nicolewclark will create custom toppers in your likeness!

Monograms were huge a few years ago, and continue to be a favorite theme for weddings. This example brings together the bride and groom’s first names, and their new married last name together in the center.
Others opt for a single initial cake topper, with the bride and groom’s new last name. It is a bit of a cleaner look and looks fabulous alongside the ribbon and icing detail!

Word of the Week: Overlay

1. something laid over something else; covering

2. a layer or decoration of something applied: an overlay of gold.

Wedding Wise:

A fabric atop another (sometimes the color of the layer underneath changes the overall appearance of the overlay itself!). Often overlays do not cover the entire table (which is why they go OVER another linen.) However some overlays can be used atop and completely cover the bottom layer.

Overlays are fabulous additions to any design schematic. Whether it’s coordinating with a chair cover sash or adding  over a  neutral floor length linen. They give a monochromatic feel when coordinated to the chair or cover.

Whether a sheer, patterned or texture, overlays give a wonderful sense of depth and style to any tabletop.

This burlap overlay was perfectmatch to bring the outdoors in for Christie & Tim’s July wedding at the Cylburn Arboretum.
